…But It Was A Long Way Off

I walked along
North Country Trail, picked
along bleached stones
and roots like finger’s bones
scuffed smooth and soft
along the path
that is the scoliosis
spine of Lake Superior,

              the cool blue back
              of fleshy water, endless
              water, to my right.

My eyes trekked slow
along horizon, where heat
makes hazy ice waves waver,

I thought I saw
              in the distance

              a pirate ship,
              a paddleboard,
              a parachuter falling

              from a Boeing 747
              diving dolphin shiny
slick and quick into the lake
              moving toward me
              in measured backstrokes,
              cutting the stretched surface
skin of water like a finger
              down the curvy trail
              along a lover’s spine.
